Annapolis Basin
PJILA'SI - BIENVENUE - WELCOME
Step back in time as you bike, paddle or sail through history.
In the summer of 1605, French explorers led by Sieur de Mons and the cartographer Samuel de Champlain built a settlement on a beautiful river basin in Nova Scotia, and named it Port Royal. This was the first European settlement north of Florida. But for thousands of years before that the Mi’kmaq had been walking gently on this land where we now live and play– Mi’kma’ki.
Port Wade is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People, and we acknowledge them as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land.
You’ll find us just fifteen minutes from historic Annapolis Royal on Granville Road—the oldest road in Canada. Port Wade has something for everyone, including history buffs.
Cyclists can enjoy quiet roads that lead to stunning lookouts. Take the Blue Route past the Habitation in Port Royal, or climb up over the North Mountain to Delaps Cove where on a clear day you can see New Brunswick across the Bay of Fundy.
Boating enthusiasts can launch from our beach and discover why the French and the Mi’kmaq thrived here. With its sheltered waters, temperate climate, and wealth of bass, mackerel, flounder and other fish, the Basin is an ideal environment for community life, sightseeing and sports.
We hope you enjoy your Slacktide adventure, whether pedalling, paddling or sailing. Keep an eye out for friendly seals and don’t forget to save some time in your trip to gather a bucket of fresh clams or mussels at low tide!
